Project Management Lifecycle

  #

I didn't write this, and agree that this does describe bad project management, but this is just too funny not to share. We never want to take ourselves too seriously.

The Parable of Project Management

In the beginning was the Plan, created by the finest non-PMP project management consultants to be found throughout the land (in order to conform to budget requirements), to carry out the wishes of the all powerful President, who all agreed was the wisest of the wise. It had come to him in a vision while golfing with a technology sales executive, and it was good.

And then came the Assumptions...

And the Assumptions were without form...

And the Plan was without Substance...

And darkness was upon the face of the Workers.

And the Workers spoke among themselves saying, "It is a crock of
shit, and it stinks."

And the Workers went unto their Supervisors and said, "It is a crock
of dung, and we cannot live with the smell."

And the Supervisors went unto their Managers saying, "It is a  container of organic waste, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it."

And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying, "It is a vessel of
fertilizer, and none may abide its strength."

And the Directors spoke among themselves, saying to one another, "It
contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong."

And the Directors went to the Vice Presidents, saying unto them, "It
promotes growth, and it is very powerful."

And the Vice Presidents went to the President, saying unto him, "It
has very powerful effects."

And the President looked upon the Plan and saw that it was good.

And the Plan became Policy.

And that is how stuff happens.

Thomas Friedman and the New York Times

  #

Not many writers and thinkers more worthy of attention than Thomas Friedman. Check out an excellent review of his new book  ''The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century.'' by an equally worthy commentator,  FAREED ZAKARIA. Even if you don't subscribe to the New York Times, you can always read his columns on the web. For example:

 Bangalore: Hot and Hotter

Published: June 8, 2005

Bangalore, India

Every time I visit India, Indians always ask me to compare India with China. Lately, I have responded like this: If India and China were both highways, the Chinese highway would be a six-lane, perfectly paved road, but with a huge speed bump off in the distance labeled "Political reform: how in the world do we get from Communism to a more open society?" When 1.3 billion people going 80 miles an hour hit a speed bump, one of two things happens: Either the car flies into the air and slams down, and all the parts hold together and it keeps on moving - or the car flies into the air, slams down and all the wheels fall off. Which it will be with China, I don't know. India, by contrast, is like a highway full of potholes, with no sidewalks and half the streetlamps broken. But off in the distance, the road seems to smooth out, and if it does, this country will be a dynamo. The question is: Is that smoother road in the distance a mirage or the real thing? More

Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
by Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner
is an extraordinary book that, without ever mentioning the term, brings new life to systems theory. Reading it is like spending an evening with my old friend and mentor, Robbin Hough, PhD.

The Wisdom of Crowds

A phenomonal book, The Wisdom of Crowds by James Surowiecki contemplates the value of decision-making by groups rather than individuals. If you doubt the value of diversity and independence of thought in the development of arriving at correct conclusions, this book is an absolute must read!
